Dermot Mc Cormack Death, Obituary- Dermot Mc Cormack’s death on 14 May 2023 rocked our club. Dermot played, coached, supervised, and supported Carrickedmond GAA for 50 years. Dermot liked GAA.
Dermot’s warmth, compassion, and love were evident at Carrickedmond GAA for years. Big D adored Carrickedmond and GAA.
Colehill National School, Ballymahon Vocational School, and St. Mels College starred Dermot. Early 1980s Carrickedmond Minor Club thrived. Dermot worked in England in his 20s and played GAA. Dermot played midfield for Ireland in the mid-1990s. As the Club won the Intermediate Championship and Division 2 League double in 2001, Dermot was named Man of the Match.
Dermot helped our younger players acclimate to senior football. In his 40s, Dermot mentored while playing midfield in the 2009 and 2010 Junior A Championship finals. Dermot played senior and minor Longford Masters. Dermot represented Carrick Sarsfields and Carrickedmond. Dermot coached teams from 8 to 18. Dermot Feiled in Kerry, Mayo, and the UK.
Many triumphs included the 2016 under-16 County Championship. Dermot’s excitement, competence, and most importantly his caring for each team member and desire for the best on and off the field benefitted every squad he was involved with. Dermot was senior manager and selector from 2006. Dermot helped many coaches. 2009, 2014, and 2017 Division 2 League titles are highlights.
Dermot was Vice Chairman, Irish Officer, Development Officer, Committee member, and Chairman (2007–2009) throughout the past 20 years. Dermot was passionate about promoting GAA, getting as many people as possible to play football in the parish, and making sure everyone had the best facilities to show off their skills.
Dermot led our 2009 La na gClub 125th anniversary celebrations. Dermot always supported fundraisers like super draws, weekly lottos, and more. Dermot on and offstage at our 2019 fundraiser Lipsync. Dermot’s two-night performance thrilled the audience.
Dermot engaged in Community Games, Pastoral Council, Carrickedmond Church Choir, and farming groups. He volunteered widely. Dermot always had a smile and a chat. Carrickedmond GAA lost a dear member on 14 May 2023. Everyone remembers this great athlete, coach, and administrator. Carrickedmond GAA will never forget him. We send our sympathies to Dermot’s wife Charlotte, boys James, Ben, Aaron, father Jimmy, brother Seamus, sisters Marie, Paula, and Mairead, and the extended Mc Cormack family.
